Measuring Guide

Choosing the Right Gate Size

Standard Sizes or Bespoke – We’re Here to Help

At Oakland Outdoors, we understand that every property is different.

That’s why we offer a carefully selected range of standard gate sizes alongside our fully bespoke manufacturing service.

Many customers will find that one of our standard sizes is the perfect fit, making ordering simple and straightforward. However, if your opening is unusual or you’re looking for something unique, our workshop can manufacture a gate to your exact requirements.

Whether you choose a standard size or a bespoke design, every gate is handcrafted in our Essex workshop using the same premium materials and attention to detail.

Our Standard Gate Sizes

Many of our entrance and driveway gates are available in a range of popular standard sizes, designed to suit the majority of residential properties.

If one of our standard sizes is suitable for your opening, simply select the appropriate size when ordering.

If you’re unsure which size is right for you, our team will be happy to help.

When Should I Choose a Bespoke Gate?

A bespoke gate may be the best option if:

  • Your opening doesn’t match one of our standard sizes.
  • You require a unique design.
  • You have existing pillars or walls with unusual dimensions.
  • Your driveway or garden slopes.
  • You’d like matching gates and garage doors.
  • You’re working on a commercial or heritage property.

Every bespoke gate is manufactured specifically for your project.

How to Measure Your Opening

For bespoke orders, simply measure the finished opening where your gate will be installed.

Measure:

  • Between existing gate posts.
  • Between brick pillars.
  • Between walls.
  • Or the finished opening if you’re installing new posts.

Take measurements at the top, middle and bottom of the opening and send us all three dimensions if they differ.

Where possible, please provide photographs of the opening, as these help us recommend the most suitable solution.

Standard Sizes & Manufacturing Tolerances

If you’re ordering one of our standard sizes, simply choose the size that best suits your opening.

If you’re ordering a bespoke gate, please provide the actual opening measurement only.

There’s no need to deduct clearances for hinges, gaps or movement. Our experienced team will calculate all necessary manufacturing tolerances during production to ensure your gate fits correctly and operates smoothly.

As timber is a natural material, appropriate operating clearances are essential to allow for seasonal movement and reliable day-to-day operation.

New Posts or Existing Posts?

Please let us know whether you’ll be using:

  • Existing gate posts.
  • Existing brick pillars.
  • Existing walls.
  • New timber posts.
  • New steel posts.

If you’re installing new posts, we’ll be happy to recommend suitable post sizes for your chosen gate.

Ground Levels

Ground conditions play an important role in how a gate is manufactured.

Please let us know whether your opening is:

  • Level.
  • Slightly sloping.
  • Steeply sloping.

Photographs are always appreciated and help us recommend the best solution.

Ground Clearance

When measuring, consider the finished surface beneath your gate.

Examples include:

  • Gravel.
  • Block paving.
  • Resin.
  • Tarmac.
  • Decorative stone.
  • Grass.

We’ll advise on the most suitable ground clearance for your installation.

Gate Opening Direction

Please let us know how you’d like your gate to operate.

For example:

  • Opening inwards.
  • Opening outwards.
  • Left-hand opening.
  • Right-hand opening.
  • Single gate.
  • Pair of gates.

If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to advise.

Gate Automation

If you’re planning to automate your gate, either now or in the future, please let us know before manufacturing begins.

We can prepare suitable gates for automation and recommend the most appropriate construction for your chosen system.

Information We’ll Need

To provide an accurate quotation, it’s helpful if you can send us:

  • Opening width
  • Photographs of the opening
  • Preferred timber (softwood or hardwood)
  • Preferred design
  • Preferred finish
  • Delivery postcode

The more information you provide, the easier it is for us to recommend the perfect solution.

Need Some Advice?

If you’re unsure whether a standard size or bespoke gate is the right choice for your project, our experienced team is always happy to help.

We’ll guide you through the measuring process, recommend the most suitable option and ensure your new gate is manufactured to the highest standard.
